A two-day “Natural Birthing Workshop” was organized by Kaivalya Wellness Hub on 9-10 February 2024 in Indore city. This workshop was inaugurated by Padmashree Janak Palta ji. She said that even today natural fertility occurs in tribal communities and rural areas. It should be seen why women in cities are moving away from natural childbirth. The following were the speakers in this workshop.
- Dr. Usha Ukande ji – midwifery expert and former Principal of Choithram Nursing College, Indore,
- Leena Gandhi ji (from Delhi) – as Lamaze instructor and representative of Mrs. Nutan Pandit ji and Garbharambh
- Shamshad Parveen ji (from Satna, Madhya Pradesh) – Love and Light Meditation Center, Director,
- Vaidya Shefali – Ayurveda doctor, Naadi Parikshak and Garbhsanskaar specialist, Kaivalya Wellness Hub, Indore,
- Dr. Meenal Somani – Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, Holistic Centre, Rau, Indore,
- Sarita Parmar – Yoga and Pyramid Meditation preacher, Indore

Dr. Usha shared her experience about how she opened a natural delivery center named ‘Swa’ in Choithram Hospital and ran it for 5 years until Covid struck. Due to this, deliveries through operation reduced. She told that under the traditional midwifery system, most of the deliveries were natural. This system stood as a strong pillar for women in the society, which is broken today. Dr. Usha said that if a midwife is endowed with three qualities, i.e. (1) expertise, (2) intuition and (3) wisdom, she can provide good care to the pregnant woman – can provide birthing safely and with comfort.
Leena ji, who is a Lamaze instructor herself, explained in her statement how various breathing methods aid in natural delivery. She also told how along with the pregnant woman, her husband is also trained. That is, they give correct information to the couple regarding pregnancy and delivery, and prepare them for it.
Leena ji also explained in detail the historical aspect of the midwifery tradition in the world, how pregnancy was declared as a disease in Europe in the 16th century, how the midwifery system was declared illegal, and the role of the doctor was established with the power of law.
Dr. Minal Somani ji told how women’s good health can be maintained by the safety and health of pelvic (hip) muscles. That is, women of all age groups have to be aware of being completely healthy – whether married or unmarried. She also told that for natural delivery it is necessary to strengthen the pelvic muscles. For that she also suggested some simple exercises.
Vaidya Shefali explained about the various stages of Garbha Sanskar from the point of view of Ayurveda. How can conception be done so that the pregnancy is free from genetic defects and the woman has a healthy mind; and a healthy baby is born. For childbirth to be natural, many methods are given in Ayurveda and importance of diet is also explained. And how does a woman recognize her power, when she herself goes through natural childbirth. She also gave examples from the experiences of Vaidya PLT Girija, Chennai. The importance of good music and a good book during pregnancy was also explained.
Shamshad Parveen ji shared her experience of how due to her determination, all three of her children had natural delivery without any drip, while the third child was born breach. With meditation and determination, pregnant women can give birth naturally.
Sarita Parmar ji shared her experience of how the use of meditation, yoga and pyramid can be of great help in natural delivery and healthy pregnancy.
After the presentation of all the speakers, there was a discussion on what should be done at present. Some points are given here:-
- Women – doula training,
- Awareness sessions about women’s health,
- Creating a support group,
- Courses should be prepared through which nurses, midwives and doctors can be trained about natural delivery,
- Women who wish to have natural delivery should be taken with full preparation. In this, Dr. Shefali should take initiative under the guidance of Usha Madam, and also have the support of a hospital so that surgery is available, if necessary.
